NOWSTALGIA
A theatre concert by RIVA and AGGRASOPPAR
Performances 26th-28th of November in the Nordic House in the Faroe Islands
Between the worlds of Utopia and Dystopia we find Nowstalgia - a protopic world where time is not as we know it, because here it is the now that rules. The main characters of this world are insects and it is their innate will to live in the now that dictates. In the technological age people have mastered escaping from the now. Within the escapism we have developed a relentless longing for the present moment, that is constantly lost. In Nowstalgia, we are allowed to live in harmony with the present moment, insects and each other: right here, right now.
The theatre concert Nústalgia (Eng. Nowstalgia), is an engulfing experience by the Faroese contemporary dance company and the band AGGRASOPPAR. The stage work is based on AGGRASOPPAR’S upcoming album with the same title: NÚSTALGIA. The theater concert is an experimental fusion of contemporary dance, music and theatre that deals with humans’ urge to long out of the now.
Humans have always searched forward in time for the next thing to happen or reminisced back to what already passed. However, modern society moves rapidly and we plan further ahead than ever while scrolling through our past memories of a time we try to hold on to. It is this evolving trajectory that the work deals with, as well as power-inbalance, ecological destruction and the primitive longings and needs that all living beings have in common: all from an insect point of view.
Both groups work with collective creative processes and are drawn to the poetic dimensions of human existence, approached through different mediums: RIVA through contemporary dance and AGGRASOPPAR through music and poetry. The stage work takes shape in close collaboration with Villiam Soo Joensen, Jón Sonna Jensen and Vinjari Egilsnes Petersen, respectively responsible for light, costume and stage design and sound. The performance intertwines the avant-garde underground with popular art and forms a distinct artistic identity that gives space to chaos, the ugly, vulnerability, absurdity, and the deeply human.
